TeRABIT: the network connecting research and development in Italy

In his article for Agenda Digitale, GARR President Maurizio Tira illustrates how the GARR network and the TeRABIT project stand as a model of excellence for Italy’s digital infrastructures dedicated to research, innovation and territorial development.

The article retraces the strategic role of the GARR network and the TeRABIT project, which—with 36 terabits per second and 24,000 kilometres of optical fibre—represent a benchmark at the European level. Funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), TeRABIT integrates network, cloud and supercomputing into a single high-performance platform, bringing digital resources closer to researchers and local communities.

This infrastructure not only enhances scientific research but also makes a tangible contribution to the country’s development and competitiveness.
