UrgentShake at Pint of Science: seismology explained at the pub

23 May 2025

On Monday 19 May, as part of the Pint of Science festival in Trieste, Stefano Salon and Elisa Zuccolo (OGS) presented UrgentShake, an innovative urgent computing system designed to rapidly generate earthquake shaking scenarios based on physical simulations.

During the event, they explained how UrgentShake harnesses distributed HPC and cloud infrastructures to provide fast and reliable estimates of ground motion immediately after a major earthquake, integrating seamlessly with OGS’s seismic early warning systems. A key role is played by the TeRABIT infrastructure, funded by Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), which dramatically reduces computation times — from days to just a few minutes.

Pint of Science is a festival that brings scientific research out of the lab and into the pub, making it easy and engaging for anyone to discover... perhaps over a pint.
