Towards Einstein Telescope: the results of TeRABIT and ETIC

27 June 2025

A day dedicated to presenting the results of the TeRABIT and ETIC projects, two strategic initiatives funded through Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) – Mission 4 of the Ministry of Universities and Research – focused on strengthening scientific infrastructures and advanced connectivity.

The event will take place on Wednesday 9 July at 10:30am, in the Aula Magna of the Rectorate of the University of Cagliari, with the conference “Towards the Einstein Telescope: the results of TeRABIT and ETIC. From PNRR projects to ultra-fast networks and advanced laboratories for the development of research and the territory.”

During the day, two major research infrastructures will be officially inaugurated. These are the result of years of work within the TeRABIT and ETIC projects, funded by Mission 4 of the PNRR and coordinated by the Ministry of Universities and Research.

The first achievement is the completion of the regional optical fibre ring by the Italian research and education network GARR, bringing ultra-high-performance connectivity across the whole of Sardinia. For the first time, this includes an operational optical fibre link – made possible through submarine cables – connecting the island to the rest of the country and, consequently, to global research networks.

The second inauguration will take place at 3:30pm in Room A of the Monserrato University Campus, and concerns the ETIC laboratories at the Department of Physics of the University of Cagliari, equipped with cutting-edge technologies.

The event will also serve as a forum for dialogue among institutions, universities and research bodies on the importance of scientific infrastructure and advanced connectivity in driving the country’s development, strengthening its role on the international stage, and supporting Italy’s bid to host the Einstein Telescope, the future European gravitational wave observatory.
